Manufacturers & Vendors

S.M.O.O.S.I. Inventory Solutions.

S.M.O.O.S.I. stands for Slow-Moving, Obsolete and Off-Spec Inventory. GW Murphy provides a disciplined route for manufacturer and vendor inventory that no longer fits a standard sales channel.

What is S.M.O.O.S.I.?

S.M.O.O.S.I. — Slow-Moving, Obsolete and Off-Spec Inventory — refers to inventory that no longer fits a manufacturer's or vendor's standard distribution path. GW Murphy provides a structured and transparent process for moving this inventory responsibly through appropriate channels.

S
Slow-Moving
Product that is not selling at expected velocity through normal channels. Includes slow-moving colors, aged inventory and products affected by code or market changes.
O
Obsolete
Discontinued products or packaging, product-line changes, production overruns and products that have been superseded by newer specifications or building code changes.
O
Off-Spec
Damaged, faded or obsolete packaging, cosmetic defects, specification variances and products that do not meet a manufacturer's specifications or applicable code-approval requirements.
The Challenge

Inventory That Doesn't
Fit the Standard Channel

Manufacturers and vendors regularly encounter inventory that has aged out of a primary distribution path, been discontinued, produced in excess, or does not meet first-quality standards. Allowing this inventory to sit creates carrying costs and operational drag.

GW Murphy provides a disciplined, transparent route to move this inventory responsibly — without misrepresenting product condition or disrupting primary channel relationships.

How It Works

GW Murphy follows a structured five-step process for every S.M.O.O.S.I. engagement. Transparency and clear product-condition communication are built into every step.

Evaluate Inventory

Review category, condition, quantity, location and timing to determine whether a S.M.O.O.S.I. path is appropriate.

02
Confirm Condition & Restrictions

Agree on condition classification, packaging status, warranty status and any sale restrictions. Product condition is stated clearly and not implied.

03
Align on Terms & Channels

Identify suitable distribution channels and agree on commercial terms without conflicting with the supplier's primary distribution strategy.

04
Execute the Plan

Move inventory through agreed channels with the agreed handling, packaging, logistics and distribution plan in place.

05
Communicate to Buyers

Communicate product condition and applicable restrictions to buyers at every point of sale. No misrepresentation of product status.

Important — Product Condition DisclosureS.M.O.O.S.I. inventory handled by GW Murphy is not represented as first-quality unless explicitly confirmed.
